Maad Market Pyjama Edition
Monday, August 15, 2011 @ 1:52 AM PERMALINK

I know I havent finished updating about Bangkok but truth be told, the other couple days were shopping shopping and more shopping, although we did have a couple of adventures. I'll get on that soon.

I do wanna talk about last weekend first though. Last Saturday, Ale, Bong and I headed down to MAad  (Market of Artists and Designers) at Red Dot Traffic Building.

It was really a breath of fresh air from the local flea markets we have every other week. All the participants at MAad personally create their own products and services. This is one of the few markets in Singapore that truly promotes artisty in all forms and I loved it.

The atmosphere is also really great. People talk to each other and not just to haggle for cheap prices. Everyone is interested in sharing about how they got into their work or what a certain piece means to them. Buyers are also interested in getting to know the artists and how they create their world. Its a really positive place with great vibes.

When we walked into the showspace, we were greeted by one single room where musicans were setting up, a turn to the right and suddenly this HUGE space filled with delightful creations comes into sight.

This is the wall before you enter the main showcase space. Its covered with great looking name cards.

The showspace for the night was shared with some of the usual exhibits in the musuem.

Ale looking at the My Vintage Jewel Box booth.

My Vintage Jewel box sells great high quality hand crafted jewellery. The materials used by MVJB are quality gem stones and precious metals like gold, silver and rose gold. No cheap costume accessories here. But the work put into each piece is amazing, totally something I would be glad to own, if I had the extra money.

There were a ton of little shops, Booksactually was there, along with a number of really talented artists and designers that sold art pieces, brilliant photographs, handsewn trinkets, customised bags and everything was so inspired.

The best part? Apart from items, some artists came to hawk/showcase their services.

The Proletariat Poetry Factory was there with their typewriter to give the world poetry. You could select a homeless poem and bring it home with you or even give them a word for them to create a whole new poem for you. And for free! The poems were good too, I adopted one called SID.

OIC singapore was there too and they have a great concept for their showcase. You sign up on their website to pose and at the market, you pose for a group of artists who have 20 mins to draw you. Its really interesting because all the artists have different styles and mediums. During the time we were there, we saw watercolours, pens, pencils...everything.

People posing for the artists. Once the 20 minutes is up, you get to pick which pieces you like and each piece is only $10.

Those cups of ice-cream we are holding were from Tom's Palette. The stall was set up with a any amount, any price concept. Ale had the Malibu and Orange and I had the Red Wine and Redcurrent Sorbet. I'm still thinking of how amazing the ice-cream was. Have to organise a trip to their outlets soon!

Ale wanted to try her luck at the Reebonz Contest. Basically, we had to draw the Reebonz mobile truck/store blindfolded. Let me tell you, Ale is amazing, my drawing looked like a floor plan. The minute I started, I laughed and lost my place on the paper which led to a complete disaster of a drawing.

Bani was there doing a freestyle set. This man is a genius but he is honestly quite hard to understand and I wasn't feeling particularly intellectual.

Bong throughly enjoyed the set though. He stood there alone while Ale and I went another round around the stalls.

After Ale collected her prize (a prada pouch) we headed for dinner! I've been hearing that the chicken at Kko Kko Nara is really good and I really wanted to try it.

CHICKEN! The fried chicken was well, fried chicken. It was well cooked and not dry at all and the batter was nice with a hint of pepper. The spicy soy sauce wings were AWWWWESOME and the three of us really whacked it all.

Yummy.

In the end, I only bought one ring from the market just as we were leaving and yesterday I dropped it and it fell apart. :( Now I've got to get some glue and fix it up myself.

We need more markets like this, local designers deserve so much more recognisation that they get.
