hi There's Nothing Here |
Embrace The Intricate Beauty of Uncertainty Nikanything you can put anything here | What's got my goat - Pseudo 'alternative' news sites Wednesday, January 30, 2013 @ 11:21 PM PERMALINKI've had it up to here with pseudo 'alternative' news sites that claim that they are all about freedom of speech and representing the people. I can see how they came about and that it is more than likely that our country's strict censorship laws did play a large role in the unrising and popularity of these websites. People felt that alternative views or news was not being published and looked to these sites for information. There was a time when the Temeask Review seemed to be run by educated people who wanted to showcase to Singaporeans that there was more to our country and its Government than what meets the eye. They got shut down sometime in 2011 before reviving their site awhile late. Although they claim that the same people are still running the group, looking at their Facebook page, it is hard to believe. Sites like The Temask Review, The Real Singapore and Occupy Singapore (just to name a few) are now obviously run by xenophobic, uneducated, empty vessels that like to critise and incite unhappiness. Never mind the senseless 'caption please' posts. Or the constant complaints with no viable answers. Or the contradictory arguments raised. Never mind the irony that the 'alternative press' is just as biased as the media sources they are against. BUT falsifying information about a tragic accident concerning two young boys just to further build hate and xenaphobia? That is just unacceptable on so many levels. In a facebook post, the Temeask Review deliberately changed the story they stole from the Straits Times to claim that the arrested driver is from China. The post has since been removed but their status with the false information is still on their page. The Real Singapore then proceeded to post the story again with no fact checking whatsoever. Why would they? It suits their agenda right? Article here. Of course, both websites have yet to account for their actions and are just carrying on as though it is okay to capitalize (though false information) on the tragedy. Occupy Singapore did a similar thing while posting a photo of the boys' distraught mother. While being a bit clever about it, they said that '..There are all manner of drivers with dodgy licences plying the roads of Singapore, who want to make more trips so they earn more (SIC).' suggesting that driver didn't have a legitimate license, once again trying to suggest that the driver was a foreigner, unless of course they have suddenly taken to critizing our own driving schools. They even threw in a jab at the Government for causing the cost of living to be so high in Singapore. Of course they don't know ANYTHING about this family or their circumstances, but it is fine to assume as long as it fits your agenda right? It is NOT OKAY. It is horribly digusting. A tragic accident happens and these sites cook up details because the true story doesn't support their political / xenophobic beliefs. This is the reason why people are never going to take 'alternative' news sites or citizen journalism seriously. Thank you for making it look like opposition supporters are all stupid keyboard warriors who are incapable of rational thought and reasoning. THANK YOU. Labels: Singapore, What's got my goat ![]() |
