Singapore the red-necked educated spoilt baby.

Mon Lupine and I obviously are on opposite ends of the voting spectrum this elections.
1. We live in different areas and in my area my opposition is kind of sad
2. He isn't even of voting age while I am

Nonetheless, like many things, we have differing views. But yesterday at dinner, we agreed on one thing.

Singaporeans are in big trouble.

I know its election time, I know its the time you voice out your views and air your grievances but the amount of bullshit that is coming out of people's mouths that are masquerading as legit complaints is overwhelming.

Our complaint that housing is becoming more and more expensive is NOT legitimate. Young couples who are earning a combined income of >$8000 are complaining that its not fair that they have to look to other options than a HBD flat. They blame the government, they say housing is too expensive for them. But please, wake up. Are you under the impression that everyone makes as much money as you?

HDB flats are supposed to be for the lower income group, you claim its for the country's best interest. But its not, its for yours. Its so you can buy a cheap flat, do it up amazingly, complain about how expensive it was to buy and then go on expensive holidays and eat expensive meals all the time. Where does that leave the people that earn less than $2000 a month, do they deserve the houses less than you? No. But you don't deserve the flats as much as them.

I'm not saying that the property prices are not high and that is is practical to expect to buy a condo or house when you earn $4000/month but in that case, ask for legit things. Ask for the Government to provide lower interest loans to young couples, ask them to allow families to loan from them more than twice. Not for public housing to become cheaper when any practical adult should know its not going to happen. There is a lack of land here, raw materials are becoming more expensive around the world. How exactly do you expect to get HDB flats cheaper?

And imagine  if you just bought your house and how the Government decrees a cap on how much your flat can be sold and its $150,000 lower than what you paid for it. HOW NOW? You couples are all rubbing your hands with glee cause now your $8000 gets you further, but how about the couple that saved up all their money and now because of your selfish persuasion of the Government is automatically $150,000 poor. Far-fetched I know because I doubt any person ruling the country will make such a stupid decision but THIS is what you are asking for my fellow Singaporeans. Isn't it ridiculous?

Likewise, our complaints that there are too many foreign workers on our island and they are crowding the public transport systems is not legitimate either! You can't simply install minimum wage and expect Singaporeans to flock to jobs like cleaning the road, construction or working shifts on factory lines. The foreigners I work with work 28 days a month, 12 hours a day and you know what, some of the jobs they do, require this amount of time outlay. Can you find me a Singaporean that is willing to do that? Highly unlikely since we are all chasing diplomas and degrees and this kind of work is below us. Please, sometimes when I tell people I earn $6/hr, they reply me "SO LOW?!"

How much higher can you pay manual workers and once that is in place, how much higher will you have to pay professionals? Well done, once this comes in play, we'll have a system almost like Australia. No doubt casual and manual work is paid higher but guess who else pays higher tax? The professionals! In this case, the Singaporeans making the noise! YAY! How does 35% tax sound like to you? How does being so expensive to operate in that MNCs look to other countries like China and Vietnam to set up shop instead of Singapore sound? Cheery?

Wake up Singaporeans. Don't keep whining about problems that are hitting everyone else world-wide. Don't keep whining about problems when you are only looking for solutions that protect yourself.

It really sucks to see that Singaporeans feel like the Government is responsible for everything. The Government is not responsible for you if you want to buy a car and thus cannot afford a flat.

They are however responsible for the fact that as a country we need to remain competitive.

We have become a selfish country that is uneducated in world matters, spoilt rotten yet think because we live in a safe and developed country that we are up there. We blame everyone expect ourselves for our problems, we turn up our noses to foreigners.

Remember those rich kids you used to hate in school because they were as dumb as a doormat but still thought they were all that, Congratulations Singapore, you are now that kid, well done.
